Australia Country Summary

Koala Road Sign

Australia is a backpackersí theme park, with rides and adventures to suit all types of traveller. Once you arrive you will understand exactly why. Itís a country of dreams, sunsets, adventure, wilderness and serenity. Perhaps it is this, coupled with English speaking natives, a love of sport and Aussie beer in its schooner-loads, that draws the backpackers.

There are many ways of exploring Australia suited to each type of backpacker. With 40 000 km to cover, the more adventurous backpacker should try the on-road off-road life with a campervan and a map. On paper it may be easy to misinterpret the distances between major cities as it can take up to 12 hours to get from one city to another. But with quirky seaside towns and untouched national parks to visit along the journey, it can make for some of the best road trips youíre ever likely to take.

If you want to see the best of the country but arenít exactly Ďin-touch with natureí, bussing it is probably the way to go. There are various bus companies that can take you from one place to the next at reasonable prices. However, if you want to see the true outback you will probably have to book separate tours as they usually stick to the main road routes. Youíll get the opportunity to meet many other like-minded backpackers on the way, sharing and experiencing each otherís adventures for yourself and truly making the most out of your journey. You will never forget the bonds you make along the way, and the memories will last a lifetime.

Last but not necessarily least, is the jet-set option for the better off backpacker. This breed of traveller either hates slumming-it, or just has limited time and needs quick results. Luckily there are internal flight options to the main cities and if youíre tight on time this option is perfect, however you do miss out on seeing the essence of Australia. If you pick your destination cities wisely you can still get a great deal out of your visit, and you will leave fulfilled and satisfied.

Whichever way you decide to backpack Australia, you will need a bit of forward planning before you go so you donít miss anything important.
